When Minutes Matter: How Online Medical Consultation Helped Two International Travelers Access Emergency Care in Central Vietnam

Every year, thousands of international travelers visit Da Nang and Hoi An. Most trips are enjoyable and trouble-free. But when a medical emergency happens—especially at night, in a foreign country, without local contacts or knowledge of the healthcare system—getting help quickly can be challenging.

Recently, our team at HoiAnClinic assisted two travelers through our online medical consultation service. Both cases highlight an often-overlooked reality: sometimes the most valuable medical service is not treatment itself, but helping patients access the right care at the right time.

Case 1: Severe Gastrointestinal Illness in Da Nang

Patient Profile

  • Female traveler from Malaysia

  • Staying at a hotel in Da Nang

  • Contacted HoiAnClinic through our website

Initial Symptoms

The patient reported:

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Repeated vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Extreme weakness

  • Inability to walk independently

She was alone in her hotel room and felt her condition was deteriorating rapidly.

The Challenge

Although she recognized that she needed urgent medical attention, she faced several barriers:

  • No Vietnamese phone number

  • Did not know how to call an ambulance

  • Unfamiliar with local hospitals

  • Too weak to travel independently

Our Response

Through online consultation, our doctor quickly assessed the severity of the situation and determined that hospital evaluation was necessary.

HoiAnClinic:

✅ Provided immediate medical guidance

✅ Coordinated emergency transportation

✅ Contacted an ambulance service on the patient's behalf

Within approximately 15 minutes, an ambulance arrived and transported her to a hospital.

Outcome

The patient received timely treatment for acute gastroenteritis with dehydration.

After one night of hospital care, she recovered well and was discharged the following day.

Case 2: Seizure Emergency in Hoi An

Patient Profile

  • 22-year-old traveler from the United Kingdom

  • Staying in Hoi An

  • History of epilepsy

  • Had not been taking enough anti-seizure medication during travel

Initial Contact

Around midnight, the patient contacted HoiAnClinic through our online consultation service.

She reported:

  • Feeling unwell

  • Experiencing brief seizure episodes

  • Concern that a larger seizure was imminent

  • Uncertainty about how to seek emergency medical care

The Challenge

The patient was:

  • Alone in a foreign country

  • Experiencing neurological symptoms

  • Unable to organize transport safely

  • Unsure how to access emergency services

Medical Assessment

During consultation, our doctor identified several high-risk factors:

  • Known epilepsy

  • Breakthrough seizures

  • Medication non-adherence

  • Progressively worsening symptoms

The patient was strongly advised to attend hospital immediately.

Our Response

HoiAnClinic:

✅ Conducted emergency online assessment

✅ Recommended immediate hospital transfer

✅ Arranged ambulance transportation

✅ Assisted with communication and logistics

An ambulance arrived approximately 10 minutes later and transported the patient to hospital.

Outcome

Shortly after arrival, the patient experienced multiple recurrent seizures.

Because she had already reached medical care, the hospital team was able to intervene immediately.

After stabilization and treatment, she was discharged in good condition the following day.

Lessons Learned

These two cases were very different medically:

  • One involved severe gastrointestinal illness and dehydration.

  • The other involved breakthrough epileptic seizures.

However, both patients shared the same problem:

They needed urgent medical care but did not know how to access it.

For international travelers, barriers such as language differences, unfamiliar healthcare systems, lack of local contacts, and transportation difficulties can delay potentially life-saving treatment.

Sometimes, a simple conversation with a doctor can make all the difference.
